The Qur'an and its text

The words that name the Book, its divisions, and the forms its text takes.

Mushaf مُصْحَف

The physical, written copy of the Qur'an — the bound volume, as distinct from the revelation itself. The standard printed mushaf runs to 604 pages, each ending on a complete verse.

Dans EsSiraj · EsSiraj carries all 604 pages offline, laid out page by page the way a printed mushaf is, so the page you know by sight is the page you see.

Aussi écrit : mus-haf · moshaf

Surah سُورَة

One of the 114 chapters of the Qur'an. They range from 3 verses (al-Kawthar) to 286 (al-Baqara), and are ordered neither by length nor by date of revelation.

Aussi écrit : sura · sourate

Ayah آيَة

A verse of the Qur'an. The word also means 'sign'. There are 6,236 in the Hafs numbering — and a different count in several other riwayat.

Dans EsSiraj · Every action in EsSiraj resolves to an ayah: the bookmark, the note, the memorisation record, the repeat range, the share.

Aussi écrit : aya · verse

Repères et notes personnelles
Juz' جُزْء

One of the 30 equal parts the Qur'an is divided into, so that reading one a day completes it in a lunar month. The thirtieth, Juz' Amma, holds the short surahs children usually learn first.

Dans EsSiraj · EsSiraj can group the surah list by juz' or by hizb instead of by number.

Aussi écrit : juz · para · sipara

Khatm & plans de lecture
Hizb حِزْب

Half a juz' — so 60 in the whole Qur'an, each further divided into quarters. The division favoured in much of North and West Africa for daily recitation.

Dans EsSiraj · A grouping option beside juz’ in the surah list.

Khatm & plans de lecture
Khatma خَتْمَة

A complete reading of the Qur'an from al-Fatiha to al-Nas. Traditionally undertaken over a month, a week, or — in Ramadan — alongside the nightly tarawih.

Dans EsSiraj · A reading plan sets a daily amount, tracks what is done, and says whether you are ahead or behind — which is the only number that matters when the goal is to finish.

Aussi écrit : khatm · khitma

Khatm & plans de lecture
Rasm رَسْم

The skeletal orthography of the Qur'anic text — which letters are written, before the dots and vowel marks are added. The Uthmani rasm is the one fixed under the caliph Uthman and preserved since.

Dans EsSiraj · Three renderings of the Hafs text are available: Uthmani, simplified, and simplified with full vowelling. They are the same reading written three ways — unlike a riwaya, which is a different reading.

Sept riwayat, trois rasm
Tafsir تَفْسِير

Commentary that explains the meaning, occasion and legal import of a verse. Classical works run to many volumes; Al-Tafsir al-Muyassar ('the facilitated') is a concise modern one produced in Medina.

Dans EsSiraj · Al-Muyassar can be switched on under any verse while reading, and stays on until you switch it off.

Aussi écrit : tafseer · exegesis

Tajwid تَجْوِيد

The rules governing how the Qur'an is pronounced when recited — where to lengthen, where to merge two letters, where a nasal sound is held. Reciting without them changes the sound, and sometimes the sense.

Dans EsSiraj · Optional colour-coding marks ghunnah, madd, qalqala, idgham, ikhfa and iqlab directly in the text, computed on the device with no network call.

Aussi écrit : tajweed

Reading and recitation

How the text is read aloud, and how the readings differ from one another.

Qira'at قِرَاءَات

The canonical ways of reciting the Qur'an, each traced to one of the seven (or ten) readers of the second Islamic century. They differ in vowelling, in some consonants, and in how verses are counted — all within what was transmitted.

Aussi écrit : qiraah · qiraat · readings

Sept riwayat, trois rasm
Riwaya رِوَايَة

The transmission of one reader's qira'a through a named student. Hafs and Shu'ba both transmit from 'Asim; Warsh and Qalun both from Nafi'. The riwaya, not the qira'a, is what a printed mushaf actually follows.

Dans EsSiraj · Seven riwayat beside Hafs: Qalun, Warsh, al-Bazzi, Qunbul, al-Duri, al-Susi and Shu'ba. Because 52 of the 114 surahs are numbered differently between them, an alignment table keeps tafsir, bookmarks and memorisation pointing at the verse you meant.

Aussi écrit : riwayah · riwayat

Sept riwayat, trois rasm
Hafs 'an 'Asim حَفْص عَنْ عَاصِم

The riwaya followed by the great majority of printed mushafs and by most of the Muslim world east of Libya. It is the default reading almost everyone means by 'the Qur'an text'.

Dans EsSiraj · The default in EsSiraj, in three rasm.

Sept riwayat, trois rasm
Warsh 'an Nafi' وَرْش عَنْ نَافِع

The riwaya prevailing across North and West Africa — Morocco, Algeria, much of Mauritania, Senegal and beyond. It differs from Hafs in vowelling, in several readings, and in verse numbering.

Dans EsSiraj · Bundled in full, offline, with its own verse numbering respected.

Sept riwayat, trois rasm
Qari قَارِئ

One who recites the Qur'an aloud, and by extension a reciter whose recordings are studied and followed. Murattal is the measured style used for study; mujawwad the ornamented one used for listening.

Dans EsSiraj · Thirty-one reciters — twenty-four Arabic voices, several in both murattal and mujawwad, plus seven recitations in translation. Reading and memorisation can each use a different voice.

Aussi écrit : qaari · reciter

Memorisation

The vocabulary of hifz, and the method EsSiraj uses to schedule it.

Hifz حِفْظ

Committing the Qur'an to memory. One who has memorised it entirely is a hafiz. The difficulty is not learning a passage but holding hundreds of them at once, which is why revision, not acquisition, is the real work.

Dans EsSiraj · A spaced-repetition engine schedules each memorised ayah for review at the moment it is about to be forgotten, with cloze, elaborative-recall and tajwid drills and an exam mode.

Aussi écrit : hifdh · memorisation

Mémorisation intelligente (Hifz)
Spaced repetition

A scheduling method that shows material again just before it would be forgotten, lengthening the gap each time it is recalled correctly. It converts a fixed daily effort into retention that keeps growing.

Dans EsSiraj · EsSiraj's Qur'an scheduler is SM-2 derived; the hadith review cycle uses plain Leitner boxes at 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days.

Aussi écrit : SRS · SM-2 · Leitner

Mémorisation intelligente (Hifz)
Cloze deletion

An exercise that removes words from a passage and asks the learner to supply them. It tests production rather than recognition, which is the difference between being able to recite and being able to follow along.

Dans EsSiraj · Words are removed from an ayah and typed back without diacritics, so a correct answer is not defeated by a missing vowel mark.

Aussi écrit : fill in the blanks · texte à trous

Mémorisation intelligente (Hifz)

Prayer

The obligatory prayers, the voluntary ones, and what is owed when one is missed.

Salah صَلَاة

The ritual prayer, obligatory five times a day at times fixed by the sun: Fajr before sunrise, Dhuhr after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset, Isha at nightfall.

Dans EsSiraj · Times are computed on the device from your coordinates, with seven calculation methods and four madhhab options for Asr.

Aussi écrit : salat · namaz · prayer

Horaires de prière précis & adhan
Adhan أَذَان

The call announcing that a prayer time has entered, traditionally given aloud from the mosque. The iqama is the second, shorter call given immediately before the prayer begins.

Dans EsSiraj · Seven built-in adhan voices plus your own audio file, played full-screen over the lock screen, with a silent or vibration-only mode.

Aussi écrit : azan · call to prayer

Horaires de prière précis & adhan
Madhhab مَذْهَب

One of the schools of Islamic jurisprudence — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, Hanbali. For prayer times the practical consequence is Asr: the Hanafi position places it later than the other three.

Dans EsSiraj · Selectable, and it changes the Asr time the app shows and the adhan it fires.

Aussi écrit : school of law · mazhab

Horaires de prière précis & adhan
Qibla قِبْلَة

The direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, which every prayer faces. It is a great-circle bearing, not a compass heading — which is why it can point north from places that lie south of Mecca.

Dans EsSiraj · A compass corrected for magnetic declination, with haptic feedback when the phone is aligned.

Aussi écrit : kiblah · qiblah

Boussole qibla
Nawafil نَوَافِل

Voluntary prayers offered beside the five obligatory ones. They are recommended, not owed: missing one incurs nothing.

Dans EsSiraj · Twelve are tracked in a journal of their own — never recorded as missed, never entering the qada ledger, never shown as a percentage, because a voluntary act scored out of a target stops being voluntary.

Aussi écrit : nafl · sunnah prayers · voluntary prayers

Sunna et prières surérogatoires
Rawatib رَوَاتِب

The eight voluntary prayer units attached by name to the obligatory prayers — before Fajr, before and after Dhuhr, after Maghrib, after Isha. The most emphasised of the nawafil.

Aussi écrit : sunan rawatib · regular sunnah

Sunna et prières surérogatoires
Duha ضُحَى

A voluntary prayer of the mid-morning, offered from roughly twenty minutes after sunrise until shortly before midday.

Dans EsSiraj · Anchored to computed sunrise, with its window shown rather than a single time.

Aussi écrit : dhuha · chastt · forenoon prayer

Sunna et prières surérogatoires
Tahajjud تَهَجُّد

The night prayer, offered after waking from sleep and before Fajr. Shaf‘ (an even number of units) and Witr (an odd one, usually the last prayer of the night) close it.

Aussi écrit : qiyam al-layl · night prayer

Sunna et prières surérogatoires
Witr وِتْر

Literally 'odd'. The prayer of an odd number of units that ends the night's worship, offered after Isha and before Fajr.

Sunna et prières surérogatoires
Qada قَضَاء

A prayer performed after its time has passed, to discharge what was owed. Distinct from a prayer performed late within its window, which is not a qada.

Dans EsSiraj · Missed prayers accumulate in a ledger you can pay down. Excused periods — menstruation, documented illness — never enter it, because counting them as a debt would be both wrong and discouraging.

Aussi écrit : qadaa · kadaa · make-up prayer

Hadith scholarship

The apparatus the muhaddithun built to judge a report — and that EsSiraj renders.

Hadith حَدِيث

A report of what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, did, or tacitly approved. Each consists of a matn (the text) and an isnad (the chain of people who transmitted it).

Dans EsSiraj · The nine canonical collections — 62,535 hadiths — with the isnad read from the source markup rather than inferred.

Aussi écrit : hadeeth · ahadith

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Kutub al-Tis'a الكُتُب التِّسْعَة

The nine collections treated as the working canon of Sunni hadith: the two Sahihs (al-Bukhari, Muslim), the four Sunan (Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah), the Muwatta of Malik, the Sunan of al-Darimi and the Musnad of Ahmad.

Dans EsSiraj · All nine, with their own counts: Bukhari 7,103 · Muslim 5,445 · Abu Dawud 4,601 · al-Tirmidhi 3,888 · al-Nasa’i 5,665 · Ibn Majah 4,331 · Malik 1,756 · al-Darimi 3,368 · Ahmad 26,378.

Aussi écrit : the Nine Books · nine collections

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Isnad إِسْنَاد

The chain of narrators through which a report reached the compiler — each naming the one before, back to a Companion and then to the Prophet ﷺ. The science of hadith is largely the science of judging these chains.

Dans EsSiraj · Read from the markup, never inferred: a link between two narrators is drawn only where the source writes a transmission formula between them. Where the source is silent, no link is drawn — inventing one would invent a transmission.

Aussi écrit : sanad · chain of narration · chain of transmission

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Matn مَتْن

The text of a hadith — what was actually said — as opposed to the isnad that carries it. Two sound chains often deliver slightly different wordings of the same report.

Dans EsSiraj · Two versions of a matn can be compared word by word. The comparison runs on the folded form, without vowels and with hamzas normalised, so two spellings of one word do not read as a divergence.

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Takhrij تَخْرِيج

Tracing a hadith to every collection that records it, and stating the result in the consecrated formulas — muttafaq ‘alayh when both Sahihs have it, rawahu al-jama‘a when the major collections do, infarada bihi when only one does.

Dans EsSiraj · Computed from attestations rather than typed by hand. The strict reading of muttafaq 'alayh requires the same Companion in both Sahihs: counting every occurrence regardless would give 37,075 instead of 24,361, and make the muhaddithun say what they did not say.

Aussi écrit : takhreej

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Muttafaq 'alayh مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْه

Said of a hadith recorded by both al-Bukhari and Muslim, from the same Companion. The strongest ordinary grading a report can carry, and the reason the phrase is used as a shorthand for reliability.

Aussi écrit : agreed upon

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Sighat al-ada' صِيغَة الأَدَاء

The words a narrator uses to say how they received a report — haddathana ('he narrated to us'), akhbarani ('he informed me'), sami‘tu ('I heard'), 'an ('from'). It is the first thing a critic reads in a chain, because it says how direct the contact was.

Dans EsSiraj · Shown for each link, and used to decide whether a link exists at all.

Aussi écrit : transmission formula

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Sahabi صَحَابِيّ

A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ — someone who met him as a believer. Every isnad ends at one, which is why the Companion at the head of a chain identifies the report as much as its wording does.

Aussi écrit : Companion · sahaba

Les neuf recueils de hadiths
Muhaddith مُحَدِّث

A scholar of hadith — one who knows the reports, the narrators, and the criticism levelled at each. The verdicts EsSiraj displays are theirs, and are shown signed rather than summarised.

Daily practice

Dhikr, the calendar, and the intention behind offering software for free.

Dhikr ذِكْر

Remembrance of God through set phrases — tasbih, tahmid, takbir, istighfar — repeated a given number of times. Adhkar are the collected formulas for particular moments: morning, evening, sleep, travel, distress.

Dans EsSiraj · The morning, evening and sleep adhkar with their sources, a library of 133 categories, floating on-screen bubbles on Android, and adhkar you write yourself.

Aussi écrit : zikr · adhkar · azkar

Adhkar du matin et du soir
Tasbih تَسْبِيح

Glorification of God — saying subhan Allah — and, by extension, the string of beads used to count repetitions. The classic count after prayer is thirty-three of each of three phrases.

Dans EsSiraj · A counter with presets, vibration feedback, a floating bubble that counts over other apps, and weekly and monthly statistics.

Aussi écrit : tasbeeh · misbaha · subha · prayer beads

Tasbih électronique
Wird وِرْد

A portion of recitation or remembrance a person binds themselves to daily — so many pages, so many repetitions of a phrase. The discipline is in its regularity, not its size.

Dans EsSiraj · A programme is exactly this: lines of dhikr, surahs and verses with their own targets, run daily or once — and shareable through a key you can revoke.

Aussi écrit : awrad · daily litany

Des programmes à bâtir et à partager
Hijri calendar التَّقْوِيم الهِجْرِيّ

The lunar calendar counting from the Hijra in 622 CE. Its twelve months run about eleven days shorter than the solar year, which is why Ramadan moves through the seasons.

Dans EsSiraj · Shown alongside the Gregorian date, with the notable days of each month.

Aussi écrit : Islamic calendar · lunar calendar

Calendrier hégirien
Sadaqah jariyah صَدَقَة جَارِيَة

A charity whose benefit continues after the giver has stopped giving — a well that keeps yielding water, knowledge that keeps being taught. It is given without expectation of return from those who benefit.

Dans EsSiraj · The reason EsSiraj is free, with no premium tier, no subscription, no in-app purchase and no advertising — and the reason it never will have them.
